Legal documents and letters relating to the Brotherton Indians, 1795-1843.

Eight manuscript documents and drafts of documents, most concerning ownership of Wisconsin lands on the Fox River near Green Bay by the Brotherton Indians. Documents concerning land in Wisconsin are: a copy of a treaty made in 1820 by United States Indian agent John Bowyer and Menominee Indians, conveying Menominee lands in the region of Green Bay to the United States, copied in an unidentified hand, undated; a power of attorney, appointing Thomas Dean and Thomas Dick attorneys for the Brothertown Indians, signed by chiefs George Samson, Asa Dick, Laten Dick, William Dick, Eliphalet Marthers, and Randal Abner, 1825; a draft of a petition to the President and Senate of the United States, written by an unidentified writer, 1827, concerning problems in establishment of title by the Brotherton Indians; and an ALS from Thomas Dean, agent to the Brotherton Indians, to James Clark, Chairman of the Committee on Territories, 1830, also concerning establishment of title. Also present are a deed, printed form completed in manuscript, for land in Brothertown, New York, conveyed by Samuel Jones, Ezra L'Hommedieu, and Zina Hitchcock, on behalf of the state of New York, to Joseph Barker, 1795; an ALS from J. W. Quinney to Thomas Dean, regarding financial support for the Brotherton Indians from the New York State legislature, 1832; a bond for payment of money by Dean to the Brotherton Indians, 1834; and an agreement between heirs of Dean regarding settlement of his estate, 1843.
